Once in remission, your steroid treatment will gradually reduce and stop and you’ll be offered a different treatment to keep your symptoms under control. If you have Crohn’s or Ulcerative Colitis, you may be offered5-ASAs, animmunosuppressant, or abiologic medicine. Administration of corticosteroids to pregnant animals can cause abnormalities of foetal development including cleft palate, intra-uterine growth retardation and effects on brain growth and development. There is no evidence that corticosteroids result in an increased incidence of congenital abnormalities, such as cleft palate/lip in man. However, when administered for prolonged periods or repeatedly during pregnancy, corticosteroids may increase the risk of intrauterine growth retardation. Kaposi's sarcoma has been reported to occur in patients receiving corticosteroid therapy.

This leads to an increased steroid need during rifampicin treatment and reduced steroid need after such treatment. 1) The incidence of gastrointestinal bleeding and ulceration may increase if corticosteroids are given with NSAIDs. Phenobarbital , phenytoin and carbamazepine alone and in combination, induces the metabolism of hydrocortisone, prednisolone and methylprednisolone with increased dose requirements as a result. The interaction probably applies to the whole group of glucocorticoids. Corticosteroids should be used with caution in patients with seizures.

The effect of glucocorticoids that bind to transcortin can be enhanced and dose adjustments may be needed if estrogens are added or removed from a stable treatment regimen. Glucocorticoids should not be given during infections without concomitant causal treatment. In those conditions when treatment with prednisolone can save lives, none of the contraindications generally applies.

Do not take indigestion medicines 2 hours before or after taking enteric coated or gastro resistant tablets. Unless your doctor or pharmacist gives you different instructions, it's best to take prednisolone as a single dose once a day, with breakfast. For example, if your dose is 40mg daily, your doctor may tell you to take 8 tablets all at the same time.

Assessment of the disease may be needed during withdrawal to ensure that relapse does not occur. The principle behind “treat to target”, is to treat inflammatory activity early and effectively, before intestinal damage and disability occurs. Accordingly, international guidelines recommend reduction of steroids and the early and effective use of corticosteroid-sparing disease-modifying therapies.

Catching chickenpox can cause you to become really unwell if you’re taking steroids. For an exacerbation of COPD, recommended courses include prednisolone 40mg per day for 5 days or prednisolone 30mg per day for 7 days.
